MG Conference

Our Land, Our Heritage, OUR FUTURE and a "Question and Answer Session" with Paul James, HGTV's Host of "Gardening By the Yard," KMOD Radio Personality, the "Garden Guy" and Marketing Director for Southwood Landscape and Garden in Tulsa Oklahoma. The conference focus is Sustainability, targeting the successes in our Oklahoma history considering our rich Native American Heritage and the long-lasting influence on our horticultural methods.  The conference will feature experienced professionals and horticultural enthusiasts from the Muskogee area, greater Northeast Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It is our hope you will join us in Muskogee on June 21-22 to learn more.  

Conference registration fee is $45 per person. Thursday evening reception and dinner is not included in the fee and is an additional $15 per person. Door prizes will be given away every session as well as a Grand Door Prize of a one (1) night stay and dinner buffet at the Hard Rock Casino and hotel.

The State Master Gardener Conference is continuing education for Master Gardeners in the Oklahoma State MG program.

June 21: Thursday Afternoon Self-Guided Tours

Honor Heights Park - Beginning at 3:00 pm from the Papilion

Peace of the Prairie Organic Farm - 3:00 p.m.

  • Peace of the Prairie Organic Farm in the only example of its kind in Northeastern Oklahoma. From the house constructed with straw bales and dirt floors, the totally sustainable "off-the-grid" water and power systems, and the methods of crop maintenance totally pesticide free is a package that only the finest gardeners would envy. This young couple also manage the Muskogee Farmers' Market and sell abundant produce all season. They extend their growing season with greenhouse production and sell their produce at their farm stand. Included in their offerings are organic gourmet garlic, free-range eggs, and beautiful flower bouquets.

Pecan Creek Winery @ 4:30 p.m.

  • Pecan Creek Windery was founded in 2013 by the unlikely pair of wine connoisseurs, Dr. D.I. Wilkinson, Pediatrician and Bob Wickizer, Episcopal Parish Priest. Dr. Wilkinson owned the land suitable for biticulture, Paster Bob owned the scientific background to process the grapes into great Northeastern Oklahoma wine. It has been a great learnign experience for both as well as their viticulturist, Gary Ketcham. They have learned there is a strong tradeoff between quality and quantity. Pruning more fruit provides lower yields but gains a much better quality. But all the while, their patience has won them many awards for their unique wine blends. You will have the opportunity to sample these delicious wine varieties at the Pecan Creek Winery Tour on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Five Civilized Tribes Museum

  • This historic gallery maintains one of the finest permanent collections in the world of Native American art by artists of Five Civilized Tribes heritage. This collection gives visual form to the myths, legends, and interpretations of tribal culture and history. Among the collections are over 40 original works by world-famous artists Jerome Tiger and Willard Stone. The gallery is conveniently located to the Thursday, June 21 venue, Papilion in Honor Heights Park. Mention the State Master Gardener Conference and receive the group rate of $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for Senior Citiziens.

Muskogee Master Gardener Pam Turnbull's Gardens

  • Featured in the Oklahoma Gardener's magazine, Pam has created beautiful perennial and raised bed vegetable gardens, fairy gardens, herb circle, shade garden containing many unique garden accent features.

Reception is on the lawn of the beautiful and unique Papilion, Oklahoma's singular Butterfly Pavilion as well as a catered tenderloin dinner and entertainment by John Timothy, Creek Flautist. during dinner beautiful music will be provided by local artist and pianist John Turnbull.

  • Reception and Dinner is not included in the conference fee. Please mark and include the $15/person fee on your registration.
  • Dinner choices include Beef Tenderloin or Mushroom-Swiss Chicken. Please indicate your preference when registering!
