Students Transform Parking Lot into a Therapeutic Garden for a Local Mental Health Clinic

In the spring of 2013 students in Lou Anella’s Applied Landscape Planning class designed a garden for the Edwin Fair Clinic in Stillwater that could be installed in the back corner of their parking lot – on top of the pavement!  Then in the fall of 2013 students in his Herbaceous Plants class installed the garden.

Students constructed raised beds from recycled wooden pallets, installed micro irrigation in each bed, and installed a paver pathway through the center of the design. Again in the spring of 2014 students replanted the beds with plants donated by the NALP and Horticulture Clubs. The beds are now thriving and producing strawberries, Swiss chard, and herbs and will soon have a healthy crop of tomatoes for guests and staff to enjoy.
