Department & CASNR Scholarship Applications

The Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department distributes over $70,000 scholarships from many donors.

Please, complete the New departmental scholarship form.HortLa Department application to qualify for Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Departmental scholarships. This is for freshman, transfer, continuting, and graduate students. The deadline is January 15 by 5 p.m. Your signature is required!

Complete the appropriate CASNR on-line scholarship application to qualify for College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) scholarships. The continuing and graduate student scholarship applications deadline is January 15 by midnight. This site also contains useful information to other links and scholarship opportunities.

Prospective freshman should complete the OSU Freshman Scholarship Application included in the application for admissions packet. More information can be found on the CASNR scholarship application website. Click on "Scholarships" then select prospective freshman. The deadline is February 1.

The transfer student scholarship application is due February 1. The CASNR scholarship application also contains useful information to other links and scholarship opportunities.

National & Regional Scholarships
American Floral Endowment Scholarships (Click on Education)

  • Mosmiller Scholar Program, and the Vic & Margaret Ball Internship.
  • Each year applications are due on March 1 and October 1.
  • Students with a 2.0 gpa or above are welcomed to apply and students with no previous greenhouse experience are especially encouraged to apply. If you have any question, please contact Sten Crissey at 206-999-6543.

American Society of Landscape Architects - Oklahoma Chapter

  • Amount: $500; Deadline: December 1, 2007; GPA: 3.0 Essay: Project Presentation
  • Financial Aid: Not considered; Other Criteria: Completion of 12 credit hours in landscape design/landscape architecture. Must be utilized in a landscape design/architectural degree program in Oklahoma.

Annie's Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship

  • Scholarship funds to students studying sustainable and organic agriculture. $50,000 is awarded year year to deserving students.
  • Applications are accepted July 15 - October 31 of each year. Recipents will be notified mid March, and funds will be dispersed directly to the school mid June of each year.

Garden Club of America Scholarships

  • Various scholarships with application deadlines from November 15 - February 10


Gates Millennium Scholars Program

  • Minority scholarships & fellowships. Deadline: January 11, 2010

GCSAA Scholarship Program (Turf - A couple of scholarships for freshman through Graduate. Applications have various deadlines March - October.)

Goldwater Scholarship (OSU Application instructions as pdf) OSU Deadline: January 29, 2010.

  • Sophomore and Juniors should have at least a 3.70 GPA and be a United States Citizen.
    Students must demonstrate strong leadership skills and express themselves effectively in writing and by speaking on topics of personal and public interest.
  • Sophormore is defined as a student who plans 2 more years of full0time undergraduate study beginning September 2008 & Junior is one who plans one more year of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2008.

Horticultural Research Institute Endowment Funds - Due Date Apri or May

  • The application deadline is April 1 of each year. The application must be post marked no later than April 1. If you are emailing your application, cover letter and resume your email must be received no later than April 1 at 11:59 p.m.
  • Students must review each scholarship application to determine if they meet eligibility requirements. Scholarships available: Timothy Bigelow and Palmer Bigelow, Jr; Carville M. Akehurst memorial; Muggets; Spring meadow Nursery; and The Usrey Family
  • A student may apply for as many scholarships that he/she meets eligibility requirements. Students applying for more than one scholarship must submit a separate application for each scholarship including separate letters of recommendation, cover letter, and resume. Only one copy of a student's official transcript is needed.

Lahoma Club of OSU (Due Date October to the Scholarship & Financial Aid Office, 213 Student Union)

  • Cumulative GPA 3.0 or better; Minimum of 30 semester hours completed; Must be enrolled fulltime for Spring 2008 semester. Participation in extracurricular activities, financial circumstances and career aspirations will also be considered.
  • Lahoma Club, an organization of faculty wives and women faculty and staff at OSU. continues to offer several $500 scholarships to men and women each year. These scholarships are awarded at the beginning of Spring Semester to selected OSU undergraduates.


Morris K. Udall (OSU Application is usually due in mid-November)

  • Any college sophomore or junior studying fields related to the environment OR to Native Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate students who intend to pursue careers in health care and tribal public policy. Majors have included environmental engineering, agriculture, biology and other natural sciences, natural resource management, and more. OSU Deadline is usually mid November..
  • 80 $5,000 scholarhsips are available for sophomore and junior undergraduate students in two categories. OSU can nominate up to six candidates. Faculty Representative contact information and the application materials are available on our website at www.udall.gov
  • Please return application packets to: Scholar Development & Recognition, 260 Student Union no later than Monday, November 12 at 5:00 p.m.


Niblack Research Scholarship Program (Deadline: February 26, 2010)

  • For freshman or sophomore majors whose interests include biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • This is a new program, designed to sponsor research projects by sophomores and juniors. Twelve scholars will be chosen. Scholarships are $2000 in the fall, $2000 in the spring, and $4000 in the summer.

Oklahoma Garden Club (Deadline: March 1, 2010)

  • Available for Jr. Sr. or Graduate Students.
  • Applications must be sent to the Oklahoma Scholarship Chair., Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis, Rt 1, Box 32, Optima, OK 73945-9725 or email: lizl@ptsi.net, phone: 580-338-6798.
  • If your application is determined to be the top Oklahoma recipient, your application will be forwarded to the National Garden Clubs for the opportunity of a $3500 scholarship.

Oklahoma Golf Course Superintendents Association (Deadline October 31)

  • OGCSA no longer used the Horticulture & LA Departmental application. Please complete the ON-LINE application.
  • Please apply for the OGCSA scholarship immediately. Application and materials must be in the OGCSA office by October 31.

Perennial Plant Association Scholarship (Click on Education, then click on Scholarship)

  • Deadline: February 2010, application available in December 2009.
  • Student should be majoring or minoring in horticulture or a related field with a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Student should have at least one quarter or semester remaiing following spring term.
  • Recipients must attend the 2010 Perennial Plant Symposium.
  • An interest in a career in perennials is preferred but not required.


PLANET (formerly ALCC & PLCAA - If you have trouble opening the link, right mouse click and save the pdf application file to your hard drive)

  • LA and LC majors deadline December 7, 2009.
  • Applicants must be enrolled at a college or university that has an accredited PLANET Landscape Contracting Curriculum and/or has a PLANET Student Chapter Membership or is a participating PLANET Student Career Days School.


Robert Felix Memorial Scholarship

  • This non-repeating scholarship is available to undergraduate (Jr. or Sr.) and technical college (2nd year) students pursuing a career in Commercial Arboriculture.
  • Scholarship amounts are $3,000 awarded 1/2 each semester of the school year.
  • Requirements: Students must be Tree Care Industry Association student member or Student Society of Arboriculture member, Advisor referral and 3.0 GPA.
  • Deadline May 1, 2010.


Sidney B. Meadows Scholarship (Annual deadline is May 31; Application is available.)

  • For Juniors or Seniors in a four-year curriculum or Graduate Students in a masters or doctoral program.
  • Student must be a resident of the 16 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia) included in the Southern Nursery Association.
  • Minimum grade point average of 2.25, based on a scale of 4.0, is required for undergraduate students or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for graduate students.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants who plan to work in any aspect of the industry (including owning their own business) following graduation and those in financial need.
  • Previous scholarship recipients may reapply; however, each are limited to a maximum of 2 scholarship awards.


Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship (Deadline May 31)

  • Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate landscape horticulture program or related discipline at a two- or four-year institution. Students in vocational agriculture programs will also be considered.
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in good standing and carry a full-time course load at the time of application and during the semesters for which the scholarship is granted.
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average overall of 2.25 based on a scale of 4.0, and a minimum GPA of 2.7 on a scale of 4.0 in their major.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who plan to work within the industry (including nursery operation, landscape architecture/design/construction/maintenance, interiorscape, horticultural distribution, or retail garden center) following graduation.
  • Previous Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship award winners are eligible for additional funding.

Joseph Shinoda Memorial Scholarship (Deadline March 30)

  • Undergraduate with floriculture specialization. 07-08 School year must have a Soph, Jr. or Sr. standing - Annual applications accepted from January through March 30
  • Scholarships ranging from $1000 to $5000 or more will be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year.

  • Over the past 43 years, $682,250 has been awarded by the Joseph Shinoda memorial Scholarship Foundation to assist 593 undergraduate students in completing their floriculture education.


SAFE (SportsTurf managers Association-Deadline October 1)

  • Four (4) $500 SAFE Scholarhsips for a two-year student, four (4) $1000 SAFE scholarships for four-year students and two (2) $1500 SAFE Scholarships for graduate students.
  • Applications are judged on academic preparation, cumulative grade point average, experience in sports turf management, and references provided by student advisors and previous or current employers.


Sam Noble Scholarships (Deadline: February 15)

  • Available to students residing in the following counties: Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Choctaw, Coal, Jefferson, Garvin, Johnston, Love, Marshall, McCurtain, Murray, Pontotoc, Pushmataha, Stephens

Sarah Bradley Tyson Memorial Fellowship

  • ($1000 award - Fellowships for advanced study at an educational institution of recognized standing in the U.S. Criteria: Awards have been made in recognition of leadership in cooperative extension work and initiative in scientific research. Write to the address listed, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope for an application and further information. Scotts Company Scholarship Deadline March 1

  • Full-time freshman, sophomore, junior or a graduating high school senior who has been accepted at an accredited university, college, or junior college for the next academic year.
  • Seeking out promising students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This includes females, minorities, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Awards of $500 are made to five (5) finalists. Two (2) winners will receive $2,500


Southwest Park & Recreation Training Institute Scholarship - Deadline:Must be postmarked by October 31, 2009 (If selected as a finalist, the 2nd part of scholarship is to be postmarked by December 12, 2009.) See Scholarship link on the right side.

  • Two (2) scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded to qualified students in the Park and Recreation field.
    • Must be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student with a major in Park Administration, Recreation & Park Administration; Landscape Architecture; Recreation major with a minor in Park Administration, Horticulture, Natural Resources or other related degree as determined by Relations and Scholarhsip Committee.
  • Have a minimum of 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 system or a 2.5 within your major (listed above) through the most recently completed semester.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professional competence through extracurricular activities and a potential contribution in the field of Park and Recreation Administration.
  • Attend the annual meeting of the Southwest Park and Recreation Training Institute February 7-10, 2010. The Institute will provide (registration, room and board). Transportation to the Institute will be the responsibility of the scholarship recipient. The conference will be held at Western Hills Guest Ranch near Hulbert, Oklahoma.

Study Abroad Scholarships - Winter inter-session, Spring & Spring Break Deadline: March.

  • OSU Study Abroad Office is offering 60 scholarships from $500 to $1000 for students who wish to study in another country.
  • Scholarships, both short-term and long-term will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis and are now being accepted for winter interseesion, spring semester, and spring break 2007.
  • Applications for Summer and fall, and academic year. Applications will be accepted beginning in January.

TOCA-Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association (Click on "Awards." Deadline: March 1, 2010)

  • One $2500 fall semester scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year to undergraduate college students pursuing a career in green industry communications. Students must major or minor in technical communications or a green industry related field such as horticulture, plant sciences, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, etc. The applicant also must demonstrate an interest in using this course of study in the field of communications.
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or above and a 3.0 in the major area of study (based on a 4.0 scale). Students enrolled in the 2006 fall semester can apply for the scholarship. Eligibility extends to two and four year program students attending institutions that offer turf management curriculums.

Truman Scholarship - Deadline October 2009

  • Appliciants need 3.5 or better GPA; be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or expect citizenship before August 2009.
  • Pursuing career in public service, as defined by the Truman Scholarship Foundation.
  • Students must demonstrate strong leadership skills and express themselves effectively in writing and by speaking on topics of personal and public interest.

Wentz Scholarships (Applications available at the bottom of the page.)

  • Wentz Leadership Scholarship deadline is March 28, 2010 by 5 p.m. All materials must be turned in at 260 Student Union
  • Student Textbook Awards are due March 5, 2010. Student must be 21 years old or older at the time of application. Submit your application along with a copy of your current transcript to 260 Student Union for priority consideration.


Western Nursery & Landscape Association

  • 2011 is the next year for a student to be selected from Oklahoma. WESTERN selects students from Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska for a scholarship on year rotating schedule. Deadline is October 1.
  • Applications can be submitted by printing the attached PDF and sending it to WESTERN (email: westernpublications@wnla.org or mailing to PO Box 8860, Saint Joseph, MO 64508 or by faxing to 816-233-4774. Make sure your school's Registrar's Office send your transcript as well.
  • Each year the WESTERN awards six scholarships to students in the horticulture field. The recipients receive an all-expense-paid trip to the ANLA Management Clinic in Louisville, Kentucky. Students attending colleges in the five-state area and working on a horticulture degree are eligible. Scholarships are given to one student from each of the five states, with the sixth given to an outstanding student in any state. The scholarship will be awarded to someone in Oklahoma in 2011. Check under the link "Association" and then hit the Scholarship link on the right. Applications are available after March 2011 and due October 1, 2011.


William F. Helms Scholarship (Deadline is March 1every year, application available in the fall.

  • For Sophomore and Junior Students

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's Plant Protection and Quarantine program is offering scholarships and career exploration opportunities to academically qualified students who are enrolled in college-level programs related to agriculture or the biological sciences. Students get valuable paid work experience safeguarding American agriculture and could receive up to $5,000 in financial assistance each year.
