Extension Activities
100% extension appointment. Mike works primarily with the Oklahoma greenhouse and nursery industries including the Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association. His assistance consists of telephone consultations, formation of fact sheets and circulars, on-site visitations and numerous extension-based workshops throughout the year. He conducts many special projects including greenhouse and urban IPM, plant material conferences and specialty cut flower, poinsettia trials and other plant material demonstration plots. Mike also works with and assists peripheral groups/allied professionals such as landscape architects, urban foresters, arborists, landscapers and other green professionals. Mike assists with consumer horticultural programs via fact sheets and statewide master gardener training sessions.
Schnelle serves on boards and advisory committees for groups such as the Oklahoma Urban and Community Forestry Council, Cimarron Correctional Vo-Tech Facility Advisory Board, etc. Schnelle also works closely with extension educators in all 77 counties. Mike has served on their state committee (Oklahoma Association of Extension Educators) as junior and senior director twice as well as being active with the group in other capacities. Mike also has served on campus committees such as Academic Standards and Policies as well as OSU Diversity.
Mike also has an interest in international horticulture and serves as a member of the School of International Studies (SIS). Schnelle was invited to lecture on U.S. native plants to the Japanese Nurserymen Association's annual summer 2003 meeting in Tokyo, Japan. Schnelle has lectured and consulted at the University of Chihuahua, Mexico in 2004 on water quality in the nursery and landscape. Mike also served as a faculty mentor for visiting Mexican scientists from Durango, Mexico, 2004-2005.
In 2006, Schnelle worked in Baku, Azerbaijan with the Oklahoma National Guard. Mike taught a greenhouse production short course in Atrek, Turkmenistan in 2007 as well as working on a tree decline problem in Libya also in 2007. Schnelle taught an IPM short course in Nepal, 2008, as well as lecturing at Chiang Mai University, Thailand. Schnelle worked with farmers and Bavico Company in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in 2010. Mike lectured and consulted with nursery and greenhouse producers in Cairo, Egypt, Winter 2012, then at the Democratic Republic of the Congo, June 2012 where he lectured to 1st and 2nd year agriculture students at Katanga Methodist University.
Schnelle is active regionally and nationally via SR-ASHS and ASHS where he has served as chair of the national nursery working group, twice, as well as serving on the extension advisory council for the society.
Mike received general training in all horticultural crops although his greatest expertise is in native and non-native woody and herbaceous ornamental landscape species as well as greenhouse crops including both ornamental and edible crops. His work is regularly published in NM PRO and American Nurseryman. He also has interest in tropical and subtropical plants. Lastly, Schnelle received classroom training from Kansas State University and has experience working in the field of horticultural therapy. Mike has worked with physically challenged populations as well as clientele in a mental health facility. He continues this interest via regularly scheduled horticultural therapy workshops. Mike Schnelle and Michael Holmes recently cooperated with the Oklahoma Development Disabilities Council (ODDC) to build a sensory garden at The Botanic Garden, Stillwater. This work was recognized by the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, Inc., Summer 2011.
Mike received a SR-ASHS publication award in 2008 for EPP 7323, Managing Storm-Damaged Trees. Schnelle received "Outstanding Nurseryman of the Year for 2009 by the Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA). Schnelle was named Outstanding State Specialist in 1998 by the Oklahoma Association of Extension Agricultural Educators. In 1995, Mike was awarded the John E. Hutchinson Young Extension Professional award by the Southern Region American Society of Horticultural Science (SR-ASHS). Schnelle has been recognized by other agencies for his extension publications with six regional awards by the SR-ASHS and two national publication awards by ASHS. Mike received the Charles N. Shepardson Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1989, by Colorado State University, based on his interest in teaching herbaceous and woody plant material courses.
Schnelle has served on various graduate committees as well as serving as guest lecturer for various departments within DASNR and for various groups throughout the U.S.
